Natural Relief for Hay Fever: A Homeopathic Approach to Seasonal Allergies
I apologise for not posting this one a little sooner – life has been busy and I have also been on annual leave which was very needed. The changing of seasons can often bring on aggravations or ameliorations for various reasons for chronic conditions, such as cold and damp aggravations – or sunshine ameliorations. But one thing that is consistent for many of us and at times myself included – is hay fever. The dreaded burning eyes, itchy nose and relentless snot and sneezing….
In this post, we explore some of the key homeopathic remedies for hay fever, along with two important nosode remedies that can offer deeper support when symptoms are persistent or recurring year after year. Hopefully you may be able to cast your anti histamines aside this summer for something gentler (please consult your doctor if you really suffer here and do what’s best for you, I do not wish for you to suffer!)
Understanding the Homeopathic Approach to Hay Fever
In homeopathy, two people with hay fever may receive entirely different remedies based on their individual symptoms. The nature of the discharge, whether symptoms are worse indoors or outdoors, the time of day, the season, itching, burning, stinging and the emotional state of the person can potentially play a role in remedy selection.
Key Hay Fever Remedies
Allium Cepa (Red Onion)
Allium cepa is a staple and favourite and it can also be useful in the first stages of colds/flu and Covid if it fits. The action of the remedy is a classic that exemplifies the laws of homeopathy – It’s similar to cutting a raw onion and suffering the after affects, but perhaps a little deeper than that. This is specifically prepared from red onion.
- Profuse, burning nasal discharge that irritates the nostrils and upper lip ( it my become dry and burn)
- Bland, watery eye discharge. Eyes may itch and burn a little, but not on the level of euphrasia for example
- Frequent sneezing (with that nostril tickle), worse in warm rooms (the pollen collects inside in a stuffy house) and better in the open air
- Symptoms tend to be left-sided or move from left to right
- Think onion cutting symptoms….
Euphrasia Officinalis (Eyebright)
Euphrasia is in many ways the mirror image of Allium cepa. known as Eyebright, this remedy is particularly well suited to hay fever where the eye symptoms predominate. I feel the key note with this one is burning – especially with the eyes. Remember the name; Eyebright.
- Intense, acrid lachrymation that burns and inflames the eyelids
- Watery nasal discharge that is bland and not as irritating as the eyes symptoms
- Photophobia and a strong desire to blink or rub the eyes – sunlight and bright artificial light aggravates and causes a bruised feeling behind eyes
- Symptoms may be worse in the morning and when outdoors in bright light
Histaminum Hydrochloricum
Histaminum is prepared homeopathically from histamine itself and is a valuable remedy in acute allergic responses. This works completely on the plane of like cures like, which we often refer to as isopathically. It can be useful in combination with other remedies or by itself when they don’t work as planned.
- Generalised allergic response with sneezing, runny nose, and itchy eyes
- Useful as an acute support remedy during high-pollen periods
- May help when the symptom picture is broad and does not clearly indicate another remedy
- Can be used alongside a more individually chosen main remedy
- Can be useful for other conditions such as mast cell disorder – if indicated and matches symptoms.
Natrum Muriaticum (Common Salt)
Natrum muriaticum is generally a more deep-acting constitutional remedy that can be indicated in hay fever, particularly in individuals who tend to internalise their emotions and may have a history of grief or suppressed feelings – such as resentment, anxiety and anger (PTSD – trauma). It can also be used acutely if the symptoms are a match – but tends to be a stronger ad deeper acting remedy for chronic issues.
- Violent, fluent discharge like raw egg white – clear and thin
- Sneezing often comes in fits, particularly in the morning on waking
- Loss of smell and taste during acute episodes
- Worse in the sun and at the seaside; the person tends to crave salt and feel worse for consolation
- Internalises suffering and emotions, does not like to make a fuss
Arsenicum Album (White Arsenic)
Arsenicum album is a polychrest remedy with wide application in allergic and respiratory conditions. It is also a somewhat deeper acting remedy than some of the plant kingdom ones – more likely to help with chronic and recurring annual corzya and hay fever. Burning, itching and symptoms that can also get a bit chesty and invade the throat. The remedy is useful for colds and flu’s, Covid and other allergies too, such as dust and pet allergies.
- Thin, acrid, burning nasal discharge that causes soreness around the nostrils
- Nose may feel stuffed up despite the discharge, with a feeling of obstruction
- Burning, watery eyes with a desire for warmth applied locally (warm water – paradoxically)
- Restlessness, anxiety, and exhaustion often accompany physical symptoms, and a fear of illness and disease
- Worse around midnight and better for warmth
Gelsemium Sempervirens (Yellow Jasmine)
Gelsemium is best known as a flu remedy, but it also has a clear role in hay fever – particularly when symptoms are accompanied by a heavy, dull, drowsy quality. It can address in sensitive, tired and nervous individuals the underlying susceptibility for annual allergies too – if indicated. There is often a headache a heavy sensation in the sinuses and forehead/eyes.
- Fluent, watery discharge with dull, heavy headache at the back of the head – occipital pain
- Heaviness and drooping of the eyelids, giving a sleepy appearance
- Sneezing in the early morning with tingling in the nose
- General fatigue, trembling weakness, and a desire to be left alone
- Anxiety and persistent anticipatory fears – melancholic disposition
- PTSD and trauma remedy (often from fright and fearful experiences)
When to Consider Nosodes: Psorinum and Tuberculinum
Some of us do suffer year in year out without fail – allergies deeply entrenched within and seem to react to many different substances, foods are things. On occasion we may prescribe a nosode to help the healing process on a deeper level if indicated and needed. Noses are homeopathic remedies prepared from disease products or pathological material – that can really work to help remove lingering susceptibilities and symptoms that may be simply expressed in this lifetime or inherited.
Psorinum
Psorinum is the nosode associated with the psoric miasm and is one of the most important remedies in chronic, recurring hay fever. It is particularly indicated in individuals who seem to lack vitality, feel the cold intensely and are coldblooded, and whose hay fever returns with predictable regularity each season. They often have skin infections or conditions that regularly upset their balance.
- Hay fever that returns every year at exactly the same time
- Offensive discharges and a generally debilitated, depleted state
- Intense itching and burning of the skin alongside respiratory symptoms
- Extreme sensitivity to cold; feels the cold even in summer
- Anxious, hopeless quality – feels they will never get better
- Depressed, melancholic state can be present
Tuberculinum
Tuberculinum is another nosode ( the tubercular miasm here) and is a supportive remedy for restless and intense individuals, with strong allergic tendencies all round. There is often a history within themselves and the family tree of asthma, tuberculosis, annual hay fever and chronic chest problems. It can be a valuable supportive reedy for clearing underlying hay fever tendencies, of indicated. It seems particularly valuable for this with asthma, although Psorinum can be too.
- Strong family or personal history of respiratory illness and allergies ( dust, pets et)
- Intense, violent sneezing fits that are exhausting
- Desires fresh, open air and is worse in stuffy, warm rooms
- Restless, changeable, and easily bored; a desire for travel or change – a typical ADHD or creative type over worker picture
- Symptoms that keep changing and where well-indicated remedies fail to hold
- Can also have skin conditions like eczema manifest but not as clearly as psorinum
Finding the Right Remedy for You
Selecting the right homeopathic remedy for hay fever is about much more than matching a list of symptoms and emotions. The best results come from a full homeopathic consultation with someone who is experienced if you can potentially afford this – if not then being gentle with a 6c-30c potency dosing with due diligence and research can be attempted at your own risk. You do have to be accurate with homeopathy or it wont work well to match your symptoms – which is why it’s always best to speak to us who are qualified rather than guess, where possible. Do always speak to a GP about any concerns with trying homeopathy and your diagnosis too – then make a decision.
